The Mostly Moose cycling route is a 67 mile loop that starts in and returns to Canaan. Moose. And trees. Not much else including’ traffic, ‘cept scen’ry. The folks who designed this tour saw four moose without hardly looking when scouting this loop. This route is fairly level when riding north and south. Bumps and hills east and west. Energetic beginners, make a two-day trip out of this one. Others can do it in a day, given enough time and daylight. Paved roads run the gamut from sometimes rough to delightfully smooth.  A large section has recently been paved.  You will pass through villages, by scenic lakes, and lots of forests, farms and meadows! Directions: Departing from Canaan take Rt 102 South to Bloomfield, then Rt 105 West to Island Pond.  From Island Pond ride north on Rte 114 through Norton back to Canaan.

Just an easy drive from Canaan, Maidstone State Forest has three main trails which run through lush woods and along the lake shores. All travel through smooth terrain and take less than one hour to walk. The Loon Trail is approximately 1/2 mile in length and goes through lush, mossy woods along the shoreline to the south end of the lake, a wonderful spot to view loons.

About a 1/2 hour south of Canaan Island Pond Lake is just over 600 acres and features a five-mile forested shoreline that is dotted with lakeside cottages and year-round homes. The village of Island Pond occupies the northwest shore, The large lake allows for motorboats, making water skiing and personal watercraft permissible. Residents and lake visitors enjoy sailing, tubing, wind surfing, canoeing and kayaking on the more. Island Pond is an excellent lake for sport fishing. Species include brown trout, walleye, rainbow trout, perch, chain pickerel, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and burbot. The VT Department of Fish and Wildlife maintains a public boat launch for small and medium-size boats on the lake. The lake freezes early and reliably creating a great offering for ice fishing.

Situated just south of the Canadian border in the town of Norton, Brousseau Mountain (elevation 2723 feet) is a rugged little peak. A short, but scenic trail provides a pleasant hike to the summit where spectacular views can be had from the top of mountains extensive southern tip climax. Brousseau Mountain is one of the few nesting sites for Peregrine Falcons. In an effort to restore their population, hiking is prohibited before August 1, a critical time for falcons and their offspring. Parking and Trailhead are located just off of Route 114 on Brousseau Mountain Rd. It is about 1.2 miles to the summit.

Bluff Mountain is located about 1/2 hour away in the community of Island Pond.  The Trailhead and parking are on the left side of Mountain Street in Island Pond about 1/2 mile beyond the end of the pavement. The trail features views of the Nulhegan Basin and surrounding hills. On the way north, you head through a high elevation gully and small moose hollow before reaching the summit and the historic Lookout Trail. Elevation 1080 feet, 1.7 miles.

Canaan is located directly on the Canadian border and, as such, the many offerings of nearby communities north of the border are within easy reach.  There are wonderful hiking, cycling and touring opportunities.   As of January 31, 2008, United States and Canadian citizens 19 years and older who enter the U.S. at land ports of entry will need to present government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license as proof of identity, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate, or a passport. Children age 18 and younger will be able to enter with proof of citizenship (birth certificate, naturalization certificate or passport).  Verbal claims of citizenship and identity alone will not be sufficient to establish identity and citizenship for entry into the United States. Permanent residents (green card holders) of the United States, who reenter the U.S. after a visit to Canada, will need to present their alien registration card and evidence their visit was of short duration and temporary in nature. Indian Stream Health Center (ISHC) is a federally qualified health center (FQHC) serving the needs of Coos County, New Hampshire and surrounding areas including Maine, Vermont, and Canada. Our 850 mile service area is one of the most remote rural regions in New England and is scarcely inhabited with 6.7 people per square mile. Originally built more than 30 years ago, the facility has served as the medical home for residents of our service area. With a commitment to sustaining a strong primary health care system in Colebrook, that is responsive to the needs of service area residents, ISHC has grown substantially since its approval as a FQHC in January 2006. “Our mission is to provide excellent preventive, acute, and wellness-focused health care to residents within the organization’s service area regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.”

Only one or two men were available and then only intermittently. Officers were first stationed at North Stratford, New Hampshire and then at Canaan, Vermont. The station at Beecher Falls, Vermont, was permanently established in July 1926. In 1931, a station was established at Island Pond, Vermont, and continued in operation until after World War II. When the Island Pond station was closed, the Beecher Falls station worked all of Essex County, Vermont. Coos, Grafton and Carroll counties in northern New Hampshire came under the control of the St. Albans Sector on Nov. 1, 1949, and were assigned to Beecher Falls. Oxford County, Maine, was included in the Beecher Falls area of responsibility from 1960 until 1983, when a new station was opened at Rangeley, Maine.
